Susan at 18
by ShoshannaWhen I was very young, I played a silly game
I climbed into a wardrobe and everything was changed
Queen Susan of a magic land -- I was a child then
But still sometimes I long to play again
We were kings and queens in Narnia, our rule a golden age
Peter, Edmund, Lucy, oh, and me
We played the game all summer long
It seemed that twenty years had gone
Children's games can seem so very real
I still remember how we rode out to the war
To fight the northern giants and to keep our land secure
I remember Caspian when Aslan crowned him king
Bring me, oh please bring me back again
And oh, it seems I see them still, the centaurs and the beasts
Come for Christmas feasts at Paravel
And Peter on the highest throne
Would raise a toast to everyone
And all the Narnian folk would wish us well
We ran from lessons and from chores to play that silly game
Hiding in the spare room where no servant ever came
The wardrobe gave us winter coats to be our royal robes
We shook the mothballs out and thought them grand
And when I'm with some well-bred boy who's brought me to a show
As he glances at his watch, I think instead
Of a dark-eyed prince of Archenland
Who bowed and smiled, and kissed my hand
I wonder who he married, in the end
I am a woman now, no more that little girl
And now that I am older I know what is truly real
But still at night I feel it, a half-forgotten pain
Bring me, oh please bring me back again
Oh, at night I feel it, I want to live that game
Aslan, oh Aslan--home again
